Lulu Blooker Contest Opens - Have You Blooked Today?
The 2nd annual Blooker prize is now open. Any book that has been based on a blog or website is eligible. The contest is sponsored by Lulu, an online print-on-demand publisher.
Lulu encourages authors to "blookify" their book content in time for the January 15, 2007 deadline. If I read their post right, what this means is that you can use your blog to create some content for it on your blog to qualify. It doesn't say that the entire content has to be created or published on a blog.
The Lulu Blooker Prize is the world's first literary prize devoted to "blooks"—books based on websites such as blogs and webcomics.
The prize will be awarded in three categories:
- Fiction
- Non-Fiction
- Comics
We're not talking peanuts and a t-shirt here, folks. First Prize is $10,000, not to mention the publicity and fame. Category prizes are $2,500.
Lulu claims to be the world's fastest-growing provider of print-on-demand books, including a growing number of blooks. However, the judges are independent of Lulu and no favor will be shown to blooks published on Lulu. The winners will be announced Monday, May 14, 2007.
The 2006 Overall Winner was Julie & Julia, by Julie Powell. This clever book was written by a young woman who decided to try out every recipe in the Julia Child's Joy of French Cooking book in her tiny apartment kitchen.
Judges are Paul Jones (Chair), Arianna Huffington, Julie Powell (winner 2006), Rohit Gupta, and Nick Cohen.
Coming Soon: The People's Blooker— Nominate and vote for your favorite blooks. That should be fun.
Lulu can't claim to have invented the term "blook," but they do stake their claim on the verb "to blookify." Since money is involved, it might be better to get some specifics from Lulu on what blookify would mean to you and your book.
For sure, get cracking on blooking your book! Just a little blook each day, and you'll be there before January 15th.
