I know several successful consultants who have written their own books, on subjects such as energy, motivation, values, & high performance in organizations.
Some examples are Bob Rausch & Energy Matters, and Bud Bilanich, the Common Sense Guy (4 Secrets of High Performing Organizations, Leading with Values) Also Greg Scott Reid, The Millionaire Mentor, and Positive Impact.
Not only do they make a little money selling their books at speaking gigs, they sell them on Amazon and on their own web sites.
Some give them away at speaking engagements, or to clients. These books demonstrate the author's knowledge of subject matter, and also show how they apply concepts when working with clients through the effective use of stories.
The other day I spent $9 for a little e-book off a book designer's site, and it was very interesting. It told a story about a person who had come to their company for services, what happened, and how
this person ended up a big success thanks to the work they did together.
Wow, I actually paid $9 for promotional copy. This story was so convincing and well-written, I wanted to hire them. I had a good understanding of what the company does, and the results they can deliver.
Wouldn't that be smart? Write a story about how you work with clients, and turn it into a booklet that you can sell for a nominal fee. You would be getting potential clients to buy an informational product that works as a marketing tool.
It would be like fishing with a net, and asking the fish to buy the net!
There are many reasons to write a book. Most people write to inform or to entertain. What if you did both, and used your stories to get clients as well? Why not? It can be done, as long as it is done intelligently.
One person who knows a lot about writing and publishing books is Yvonne Divita. She wrote a book called Dickless Marketing. Before you gasp, you've gotta admit Yvonne is a little gutsy with a title like that. Of course, she got turned down because of the title by some publishers.
The title actually has to do with her use of the school reading figures Dick and Jane. You know, see Dick run...etc. And Dickless Marketing has to do with marketing to the Janes of the world.
I figure we could learn a thing or two about writing and publishing books that you can use as "soft" marketing tools. So she is invited as our guest expert on Conversations with Experts this Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Don't miss it.
Yvonne's company is Windsor Media. She also has a blog called AHA, which stands for Authors Helping Authors. And of course, the always popular Lipsticking blog.
Don't miss our conversation with Yvonne this Wed. August 10. Be there or be square.
You must register to get the call in number, and we give away all sorts of bonus prizes at the end.
Seriously, when are you going to write your book?
